Daffodil Luncheon Set (1948): vintage crochet pattern

Materials

• Puritan Mercerized Crochet and Knitting Cotton (Article 40) — size not printed; choose a cotton thread that matches the printed doily size
• Yardage: 9 balls × 200 yd = about 1,800 yd for 4 doilies, as printed
• Tapestry needle, rustproof pins and starch for blocking
• Hook: Start with a 1.65 mm (US 7) steel hook — the printed size is #7 — and change size so a doily reaches about 19 inches.

1. Ch 6, join to form a ring, ch 1 and work 8 sc in ring, do not join this or the following rows, place a marker at beginning of each row.
2. Row 2: 2 sc in each sc.
3. Row 3: Working in sc, increase in every other st.
4. Row 4: Increase in every 3rd sc.
5. Row 5: Increase in every 4th sc.
6. Row 6: Increase in every 5th sc, then work 1 row even.
7. Row 8: Increase in every 6th sc.
8. Row 9: Increase in every 7th sc, then work 1 row even.
9. Row 11: Increase in every 8th sc.
10. Row 12: Increase in every 9th sc, then work 1 row even.

30. Row 60: Sl st into the picot loop, * ch 7, sc in ch 5 loop between next 2 cluster sts, ch 4, sc in same space (picot loop), ch 7, sc in next picot loop, repeat from * all around ending row with ch 4, tr in sl st.
