Solid granny square with no gaps
A solid granny square replaces the chain spaces along each side with double crochet stitches, giving a dense, gap-free fabric that is warmer than the classic square. Worked in worsted yarn, five rounds measure about 5.5 inches. Each round adds sixteen stitches through the corners.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my solid granny square ruffle?
Ruffling means too many stitches per side. Each side should have exactly four more double crochet than the previous round.
Can I join solid granny squares with a slip stitch seam?
Yes. Hold two squares right sides together and slip stitch through the back loops of matching stitches for a flat, nearly invisible seam.
