Quick chunky half double crochet throw

This chunky throw is worked back and forth in rows of half double crochet using super bulky yarn and a 10 mm hook, so a 40 by 50 inch blanket takes around twelve hours. It is a single-stitch project with a simple single crochet border, ideal as a first blanket.

Notes before you start

  • Turning ch-2 does not count as a stitch.
  • Count your stitches every few rows — edges drifting in or out is the most common blanket problem.
  • Adjust width by changing the foundation chain: chain 2 more than the number of hdc you want.

Body

  1. Ch 82.
  2. Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (80 hdc)
  3. Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn. (80 hdc)
  4. Rows 3–75: Rep Row 2. Do not fasten off.

Border

  1. Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each st across the top, 3 sc in the corner, then work 1 sc in the side of each row down the side, 3 sc in the corner, sc in each ch across the bottom, 3 sc in the corner, 1 sc in each row end up the side, 3 sc in the last corner, sl st in first sc.
  2. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in the centre sc of each corner, sl st in first sc.

Finishing

  1. Fasten off and weave each end in three directions — chunky ends pull out easily.
  2. Check the yarn label before washing; many chunky yarns need a gentle cycle.

Frequently asked questions

How much yarn do I need for a bigger chunky blanket?

Yardage scales with area. A 50 × 60 in throw is 1.5 times the area of this blanket, so plan on about 1,400 yd of super bulky yarn.

Why are my blanket edges wavy?

Stitches are being added or skipped at the row ends. Place a marker in the first and last stitch of each row.
