How is crochet time estimated?
Total stitches equal stitches per row multiplied by rows. Taller stitches take longer, so the estimator weights half double crochet at 1.25 and double crochet at 1.5 times single crochet, then divides by your speed.
For the most accurate result, time yourself for five minutes in the project stitch and count what you made, rather than relying on the typical speeds.
What are typical crochet speeds?
As a starting point, a beginner may work about 8 single crochet per minute, a regular crocheter around 15, and an experienced one 25 or more. These are rough estimates, not measured averages; your own timed count is always better.
Frequently asked questions
Does the estimate include finishing?
No. Add time for weaving in ends, blocking, seaming and borders.
Why is my project slower than estimated?
Colour changes, counting and reading a pattern add time the stitch count cannot see.
How long does a throw blanket take?
