Notes before you start

  • V-st = (dc, ch 1, dc) in the same stitch.
  • The strip has 15 V-sts, which become 15 petals.

Strip

  1. Ch 34.
  2. Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook (skipped ch count as dc), *ch 1, sk next ch, V-st in next ch; rep from * 14 more times, turn. (15 V-sts)
  3. Row 2: Ch 3, 5 dc in ch-1 sp of first V-st, *sc in next ch-1 sp, 6 dc in ch-1 sp of next V-st; rep from * 13 more times, sc in last ch-1 sp, sl st in top of tch. (15 petals)
  4. Fasten off, leaving a 12 in (30 cm) tail.

Finishing

  1. Starting at the fastened-off end, roll the strip tightly for the first three petals to form the centre, then more loosely so the outer petals open.
  2. Thread the tail onto a needle and stitch back and forth through all layers at the base until the rose holds its shape.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a bigger rose?

Use bulky yarn and a 6 mm hook, or add V-stitches: chain 2 more for each extra petal.

Can I add leaves?

Yes. The crochet leaf appliqué pattern on this site sews neatly to the base of the rose.
