sc is short for single crochet in US patterns; UK patterns write dc (double crochet). Check which terms a pattern uses before you start — the same letters can mean a different stitch.

How to work sc (single crochet)

  1. Insert the hook into the second chain from the hook, or into the next stitch.
  2. Yo and pull up a loop — 2 loops on hook.
  3. Yo again.
  4. Pull through both loops — 1 loop on hook, 1 sc made.
  5. Repeat in each chain or stitch to the end of the row.
  6. Ch 1 and turn; the ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
