Ruffled crochet scrunchie over a hair elastic
This ruffle scrunchie is crocheted directly over a plain hair elastic: one round of sixty single crochet covers the band, then a round of three double crochet in every stitch creates the full ruffle. It uses about 60 yards of DK yarn and takes around forty minutes to make.

Notes before you start
- In Round 1 each sc is worked around the elastic instead of into a stitch.
- Push the stitches together as you work; you may fit a few more or fewer than 60 depending on the elastic.
Scrunchie
- Rnd 1: Make a slip knot on the hook. Insert hook through the elastic, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops. Work 59 more sc around the elastic, sl st in first sc. (60 sc)
- Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same st, 3 dc in each st around, sl st in top of ch-3. (180 dc)
Finishing
- Fasten off and weave the tail into Round 1 so it is hidden in the ruffle.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make a scrunchie without a hair elastic?
You can work over a ring of chains, but it will not stretch back. A hair elastic is what makes it hold your hair.
How do I make it fuller?
Add Round 3: ch 1, sc in each st around. Or work 4 dc in each stitch in Round 2 for 240 dc.
