Ribbed half double crochet chunky scarf

This chunky scarf is worked lengthwise in half double crochet through the back loops, so a few long rows build a squishy ribbed fabric quickly. Bulky yarn and an 8 mm hook make a 68 by 9 inch scarf in about four hours, with an optional fringe on each short end.

Notes before you start

  • Turning ch-1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Because rows run the length of the scarf, the ribs run lengthways.

Scarf

  1. Ch 172.
  2. Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (170 hdc)
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, hdc blo in each st across, turn. (170 hdc)
  4. Rows 3–18: Rep Row 2. Fasten off.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my long foundation chain twisting?

Long chains twist easily. Keep the chain flat as you work Row 1, or use a foundation half double crochet instead of chain plus Row 1.

How long should a scarf be?

Around the height of the wearer is a common rule. 60–70 in suits most adults and allows one wrap with ends hanging.
