• Hook: Start with 2.25 mm (US B-1; close to an old No. 4 steel hook) and change size so the hairpin spine is firm but not tight

Hairpin lace strips

1. Wind Scarlet around the 2 prongs of the staple and tie tightly in the center over the 2 strands, forming a loop on each prong.
2. With yarn in back, insert hook in left-hand loop close to the center knot, yo and pull through loop.
3. *Push the hook upward so it lies parallel to the prongs and pass it between the prongs to the back of the staple, turn the staple ½ turn to the right and place yarn in front of staple, wind yarn around left prong to the back of staple and bring to center, insert hook up through the front yarn of previous loop on left side close to the center, yo and pull up a chain through previous loop on staple (2 loops on hook), yo and pull through 2 loops; rep from * until there are 352 loops on each side. Fasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.
4. Work 8 more strips in Scarlet and 8 strips in Blue in the same manner (17 strips).
