Materials
- Aunt Lydia's Heavy Rug Yarn (Coats & Clark) is still sold. It is a bulky (#5)-class rug yarn; substitute any bulky rug yarn that matches the gauge.
- Yardage: the original lists 10 skeins but does not print the skein size. Other American Thread books of the period list this yarn in 70 yd skeins, which would be about 700 yd (640 m) — check the current label before buying.
- Colours: 2 skeins each black and chartreuse; 1 skein each dark green, turquoise, light yellow, cerise, red and national blue.
- Original hook: aluminum crochet hook size G or H.
- A piece of cardboard 4 in (10 cm) wide for fringe.
- Hook: Start with 4.5–5 mm (US 7 or H-8) and change size so the rug lies flat.

- Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, *ch 2, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc; rep from * 4 times, ch 2, join in 3rd ch of ch-3 (6 dc sections). Fasten off.
- Rnd 3: Join black in same st, ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc, *ch 2, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc; rep from * all around, ch 2, join in 3rd ch of ch-3. Fasten off black.
- Repeat round 3 for the entire rug, having 2 more dc in each dc section in each round, and working the next 2 rounds cerise, 1 round black, 2 rounds turquoise, 1 round light yellow, 1 round black, 1 round chartreuse, 1 round red, 1 round light yellow, *1 round national blue, 1 round black; rep from * once, 1 round chartreuse.
