Post stitch ribbed bookmark with tassel
This bookmark is a narrow strip of alternating front and back post double crochet, which makes firm raised ribs that do not stretch out of shape inside a book. Worked in fine yarn with a 3 mm hook, it measures 1.6 by 8 inches, uses about 25 yards and finishes with a tassel.

Notes before you start
- The turning ch-3 counts as a dc at the start of each row.
- Because every row starts with a front post stitch over the previous row's back post stitch, the same instruction keeps the ribs aligned on both sides.
Bookmark
- Ch 10.
- Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook (skipped ch count as dc) and in each ch across, turn. (8 sts)
- Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), sk first st, *fpdc around next st, bpdc around next st; rep from * 2 more times, dc in top of tch, turn. (8 sts)
- Rows 3–20: Rep Row 2. Fasten off.
Finishing
- Tassel: wrap yarn 20 times around a 3 in (7.5 cm) card. Tie a strand through the top loops, cut the bottom loops, wrap a strand around the tassel 0.5 in below the top and knot.
- Tie the tassel to the centre of one short end and weave in ends.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use worsted yarn?
Yes, with a 4.5 mm hook. The bookmark will be about 2.25 in wide and thicker, which suits large books.
Why is my bookmark curling?
Post stitch ribbing pulls in. Block it by wetting, pinning flat and leaving it to dry.
