Heat-safe double thickness crochet pot holder
This pot holder is two squares of dense single crochet in 100 percent cotton, held together and joined with a single crochet round that finishes in a hanging loop. Two layers of cotton protect hands from hot handles. Each finished holder is 8 inches square and uses about 150 yards.

Notes before you start
- Use only cotton or wool: acrylic can melt against hot pans.
- Turning ch-1 does not count as a stitch.
Squares (make 2)
- Ch 31.
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (30 sc)
- Rows 2–34: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (30 sc)
- Fasten off the first square. Do not fasten off the second.
Joining round and loop
- Hold the squares wrong sides together, with the square that still has a live loop facing you.
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, working through both layers, sc in each st across the top, 3 sc in the corner, 1 sc in each row end down the side, 3 sc in the corner, sc in each st across the bottom, 3 sc in the corner, 1 sc in each row end up the last side, 2 sc in the final corner.
- Hanging loop: Ch 12, sl st in the first sc of the round. Ch 1, 16 sc into the ch-12 loop, sl st in same corner. Fasten off.
Finishing
- Weave in ends between the layers.
- Machine wash warm; cotton shrinks slightly on the first wash.

Frequently asked questions
What yarn is safe for pot holders?
100% cotton or 100% wool. Acrylic and other synthetics can melt when they touch a hot pan.
Is one layer thick enough?
A single layer of crochet has gaps that let heat through. Two layers of tight single crochet is the minimum for hot cookware.
