Which pom pom method should you use?

All three methods make the same kind of pom pom; they differ in the size you can make and how quickly.

How do you make a pom pom with cardboard?

The cardboard method needs nothing you won't already have, and the card sets the pom pom's size.

1. Cut a piece of stiff card a little wider than the pom pom you want, for example 3 inches (7.5 cm) for a hat pom pom.
2. Cut a strand of yarn about 12 inches (30 cm) long and set it aside for tying.
3. Wrap the yarn around the card 100–150 times for a full hat pom pom, keeping the wraps in the centre.
4. Slide the loops off the card, or slip the tying strand between the card and the wraps.
5. Tie the strand as tightly as you can around the middle of the bundle with a double knot.
6. Cut through all the loops on both ends.
7. Roll the pom pom between your hands to fluff it, then trim any long strands until it is round.
8. Keep the two long tying tails to attach the pom pom.

How do you make a small pom pom with a fork?

Wrap yarn around the prongs of a dinner fork about 40–60 times. Thread a tying strand through the middle gap between the prongs, tie it tightly around the bundle, slide the loops off, cut them and trim. Fork pom poms are ideal for bookmark ends, garlands and small toys.

How do you attach a pom pom to a crochet hat?

Thread both tying tails onto a tapestry needle, push them through the top of the hat a stitch or two apart, and tie them securely on the inside. Weave the ends in. To make the pom pom removable for washing, sew a small button to the hat and loop the tails around it instead.
